News | Brazil and France sign agreements on IP technical cooperation and Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH)


On March 15, 2022, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) and the French Institute of Industrial Property (INPI-FR) signed two memoranda of understanding, establishing technical cooperation in Industrial Property (IP) and cooperation on a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) Pilot-project.

According to the BRPTO, the IP technical cooperation agreement may include the exchange of information and good practices on the development of IP protection systems, the incentive to innovation, management, finance, and quality. The partnership will also encompass IP training and participation in events.

Regarding the PPH Pilot-project between Brazil and France, the cooperation will run for five years, starting May 1, 2022. From then on, the applicants will be able to apply the result of the examination of a patent application filed first in Brazil to expedite the analysis in France and vice-versa.

The BRPTO highlighted that each Patent Office will establish its criteria for participation.
