Companies doing business in Brazil should be aware of several legal changes since 2016 with respect to Intellectual Property.

The May/June 2017 Edition of World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR) featured the article “From Green Technology to Famous Trademarks: Legal Changes in Brazil”, written by partners Pedro Bhering and Jiuliano Maurer. The article covers the implementation of priority examination of patent applications of the so-called green technology; the end of the impasse between the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) and the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA); new guidelines for patent applications involving inventions implemented by computer programs; and the publication of Resolution No. 172/2016 by the INPI, having as a purpose to improve the independent procedure for requesting the famous status of a trademark in Brazil.
