The study on AI-related patents identified 5,100 filings. In sum, the number of such patents began to increase in 2009, reaching the levels of today by 2013, peaking at 2015, when numbers started to slightly decrease.

The electric engineering sector, comprising the fields of audiovisual technology, telecommunications, digital communications, and information technology methods for management, presents the largest number of patents filed, with 59% of the total of filings.

1,291 filings were identified in relation to transportation, followed by medical sciences, with a total of 946 filed patents. In telecommunications, a total of 667 filings were identified.

A little over 5% of the total were filed by universities and other teaching institutions, while approximately 90% of the filings belonged to companies.

Moreover, the study pointed out that 1,356 of the patents filed were in connection with core technologies, and machine learning was the technique in highlight with 1,299 filings.
